The month ahead: Clubbing in Liverpool

Start of a brand new feature when our city correspondents provide an insight into what to expect from a particular regional music scene. First up Jess Heaton peers into Liverpool’s clubland.

As Liverpool veers into autumn we start to say goodbye to an amazing summer of events and welcome a whole bunch of new ones, seeing us through till 2014. With the reappearance of students in September promoters have upped their respective games, with loads of tasty line-ups that will cater to the clubbing masses along with some much loved parties that hold strong monthly residences in the city.

With fresher’s week starting unofficially from pretty much now, watch out for the fleets of bright eyed students and fancy dress goers as they begin their own quest in getting to know the city. A really exciting and truly mental time for all of you new students, make sure you don’t waste the first month worrying about university. It’s crucial that you sample every bar and club and fill your bellies with as much booze as possible along the way!

Starting September proceedings on the 7th is Revolutions newest house night Subvert, situated in the newly refurbished Albert Docks venue - expect sleek interiors, cocktails and great music. Foamo and Jay Robinson headline this month’s event, and you can read what I thought when I witnessed Hannah Wants and Grum rocking Revolution last month. Sharing the same night on the calendar, HAUS Warehouse welcomes back RUBIX and Israeli techno pioneer Shlomi Aber. Anticipate a genre defying performance of gritty techno and lucrative deep jazzy grooves.

Ain’t nothing like a bit of 90’s revival, because who doesn’t enjoy a bop to TLC (above) or Biggie Smalls? Sat 14th Sept sees Camp and Furnace host ‘Getting’ Jiggy wit the 90’s’. Playing a variety of RnB, Pop and Dance classics, don’t forget to wear your bum bags, snap backs and Nikey airs so you can look the part whilst grabbing a glass of Hooch at the bar. The same night sees a more contemporary soundtrack over in the 02 Academy, when We are Electric launches with Hardrock Sofa and Swanky Tunes in tow.

Thursday 19th Sept sees the rebirth of good quality weekday nights, something sadly missed in the city over the summer. The launch night sees new kids on the block Less Effect bring you Muted Audio and residents to HAUS, ensuring a night of absolute bass and good weeknight vibes.

Shaking his hips on Friday 20th September is the incredible Severino, member of the infamous Horse Meat Disco and one of the unsung heroes of disco re-appreciation of recent years. He will be playing alongside The Phantom Planet Outlaws (the triumvirate of local heroes John Heckle, Binny and Mark Forshaw) at Blade Factory at Camp and Furnace. Think disco, acid house and some crazy in between bits that will uplift you from your woes and make you smile.

And then 24 hours later, the 21st sees Freeze and Liverpool International Music Festival present Innervisions, also at HAUS Warehouse, with a top drawer caliber of artists. Dixon and Ame (above) represent the German label, with Guy Gerber also there to induce the crowds into a night of tech house romance.

A event that will have every student on their toes is the 26th September Juicy vs Pause Freshers Fiesta, after their successes of last year, both parties have decided to come together and kit out the whole of The Shipping Forecast for an upstairs-downstairs student revelry. Saturday 28th September closes the month with an incredible birthday bonanza from Yousef presents Circus. Seth Troxler, Cassy, Scuba, Catz N Dogz, Adam Shelton and of course Yousef are all set to play the 11th birthday party at East Village Arts club. Can I get an oooooooooh? Circus have definitely set the bar high for the rest of the year as this is the party and line-up that’s going to be hard to beat.

The Golden Ticket

My golden event for the month must go to Chibuku’s event on the 27th September with Bondax and friends. Being held at The East Village Arts Club, formerly known as The Masque, this eloquently renovated venue will be host to one of the hottest producer duos to come from the UK, Bondax. Appearing on the scene with the smooth garage groove ‘You’re so’ (below) they have cultivated a huge fan base and will be kicking off their first UK tour this autumn.

Over the course of the 10 UK dates, the pair will be debuting their brand new live show, introducing keyboards, guitars, drum and loop machines. Envisage an intimate electronic heaven incorporating elements of post-dubstep, garage, RnB and smooth pop vocals. Oh and DJ sets from Annie Mac, B Traits & MC Juma, Tropics and oodles more. I’ll be down the front…
