Throwback Thursday: Jagged Edge & 112

Start of a brand new series on Skiddle, as our editor Jimmy Coultas peers into the past.

We love Instagram here at Skiddle. Although we’re a little bored of seeing sepia tinted images of other people’s grub we are fond of the images they’ve given us, particularly the #ThrowbackThursday series. So we’ve half inched the idea for a brand new editorial concept.

Instead of pictures we’re going to use music, be them upcoming events, old albums we love or just anything related to a longing look into the past. And for the first we’ve got our shiny suits on as we peer back to the amazing recesses that was the late 90s early noughties R&B scene ahead of Jagged Edge and 112 hitting Manchester in a couple of weeks.

Jagged Edge were the product of the So So Def camp, Jermaine Durpi’s stable, and created the honey voiced player grooves that everyone tried to get their mack onto. Just look at the video for ‘Promise’ above, the group are locked inside some kind of ice cube where they’re basically pimping it out in the most absurd Walter White coloured chinchillas ever. What’s not to love about that?

112 were Bad Boy’s equivalent, and whereas Dupri had his production cohorts to call upon Bad Boy had the big guns in the emcee stakes. They may have only made one track with the legendary Biggie Smalls, but his holier than though endorsement that it was “Room 112 where the players dwell” meant they were assured as doyens of the genre. Further records with Ma$e (also on 'Only You', above) and The Lox meant they balanced it all with street appeal as well, especially when swaggering around in leather superbike jackets. God bless the nineties.

Both groups will be hitting The Ritz in Manchester on Saturday 19th October, and as well as standard tickets there’s VIP options in Silver, Gold and Platinum; the latter even allows you to meet and greet the groups. Proper baller vibes.
