Throwback Thursday has been in a bit of a hiatus in recent weeks (blame the Christmas rush) but we're back right at you this week, foraging into the era of mix tapes in the nineties. At this point in time DJ mixes were the best way to uncover new talent, an era where you could make it in the arena of playing music simply on the basis of being good at just that. And Radio Slave, or Matt Edwards as he was operating under at that point, certainly was just that.

This mix is billed as a 'chill-out' offering, but whilst it's a long way from the bustling beats of clubland there's still enough moments of energy that burst out from the more melancholy grooves. Air, Liza Minelli, Eazy-E, The Clash and Thelma Houston all appear on the tracklisting, with the blend between Skee-Lo's 'I Wish' and Loose Ends' 'Hangin on a String' a particular highlight.

The mix was a successful entrant on Muzik Magazine's Bedroom Bedlam competition, a monthly comp which also gave national spotlight early on in the careers of Yousef and James Zabiela. It would be a few more years before Radio Slave became established as a killer remix outing with his canny bootlegging of Kylie Minogue, but serves as a glimpse nevertheless into a DJ prior before they blowed up.

He plays the mUmU Sixth Birthday on February 1st, part of a bill that also includes Gary Beck, Seb Zito and Ryan Elliot. It's doubtful you'll hear him blending silky smooth soul and funk with quite the same aplomb but rest assured he's equally as adept riffing together strung out house and techno.
