Tommy Four Seven talks 'sweat and techno', sound design and CLR London

British born, Berlin based DJ, producer and sound designer Tommy Four Seven, or known to some as just T47, is at the front of the new generation of techno artists, creating his trademark deep and uncompromising sounds.

Texture is key to his dark and abrasive sounds, which are perfectly designed to be heard in dark warehouses.

He will join CLR boss Chris Liebing on March 3rd at a London Warehouse for the CLR Showcase party, so we caught up with him for more ahead of the event.

Your music is fairly dark – is that the same for whatever you listen to or do you listen to lighter stuff too? 

Variety is important to me. For example I just picked up some great African tribal music at a second hand record shop in New York. I'm always looking to get surprised, to discover music I've not heard, it could be moody or uplifting.

Why make your production so dark – is that what you think works best in a club?

I don't necessarily write music for a club, I write music for myself. I think it's important for an artist to be authentic. I wouldn't like to pigeon hole myself and say I only write dark music but it seems this vibe is what engages me.

How did you first get into sound design? Is it different to producing do you think? Or can they cross over?

Where I don't use ready made loops or samples to create music, everything I do could technically be called sound design.

How did you hook up with CLR? What drew you to the label/Chris?

Chris dropped me an email asking for some music for CLR and soon I was asked to join their agency.  I loved the passion Chris has for the scene and to helping others.

And what should people expect at the CLR party in London soon?

A lot of sweat and Techno.

What else have you got coming up?

I've got a few remixes due to come out. The first few being for Brendon Moeller on Electric Deluxe, Truss on Our Circular Sound and for Emika on Ninja Tune.

What do you enjoy doing outside of music?

Recently I've not even had that much spare time after travelling and sleeping to get in the studio let alone anything else, so apart from that it's really just been hanging out with friends or hitting the gym.
