With the student season a distant memory and some of Manchester’s larger venues sitting tight until September’s big return, there’s still no end of exciting parties and club nights to wet the appetite of music lovers in the city, and as the spotlight falls on Manchester for the International Festival, what better time to explore some of the brilliant clubs on the fringes.
Soup Kitchen, located in the Northern Quarter is a hotbed of alternative clubbing culture, typified this weekend with the return of occasional disco-not-disco. Drawing influence from underground disco, house, psych, post-punk and more, Work Them is known for it’s eclectic music selection and forward thinking guests, and clubbers this month can expect a bonus live set from Kiosque, a mysterious analogue house and disco producer recently signed to underground US label 100% Silk.
It’s just £5 all night and only £4 in advance.
The following Saturday and across Stevenson Square, local Italodisco experts Pumping Iron are set to transform their usual residency into an all out party at Kraak. As well as residents, the crew will be welcoming DJ Benetti. Having gained a cult following for his dark electronica as Whitehouse/Cut Hands, he’ll be unleashing his lighter, high-NRG side as Benetti.
Expect obscure finds and fist pumping grooves.
Pumping Iron will also be appearing the following weekend at Islington Mill, for what sounds like a typically wild party with New York collective CHERYL, Positively Destructive and local performance art collective The Volkov Commanders. Their previous installations need to be seen to be believed, and all are welcome to this out there party at The Mill, for “what might be the most anxiety and euphoria-provoking dance event in history.”
It’s just £5 and runs until 6AM.
