V Festival Director, Bob Angus comments:
“We’re keeping up the finest calibre of acts for this year’s 10th V Festival and are thrilled to bits with these cracking additions. With just 2 months to go we look forward to completing the 80 strong final line-up!”
Liverpool band, The La’s released their debut album in 1990 and it was instantly declared a classic, spawning the single ‘There She Goes’. Then, after a tour in 1991 they disappeared from the music scene without a trace. However, they returned this year and V Festival is one of their first UK dates in over a decade!
Sonic Youth was one of the most unlikely success stories of underground American rock in the 1980’s. Sonic Youth have been making music for over 20 years and are embarking on an European tour throughout the summer before descending on The V Festival in August.
Since turning their childhood friendship in South London into a full-time songwriting partnership, Turin Brakes have barely paused for breath. They were signed in 2000 and are now on their third album – ‘JackInABox’, a ‘rock’n’soul’ album which will be sure to entertain festival goers come August.
The Presidents of the United States of America have been releasing music for 10 years but split in 1997, only to re-form last year – in the midst of an unpredictable election year. Their second album, ‘II’ received no less than 2 Grammy nominations and critical praise for its pop savvy style.
10 strong, Ozomatli, a multi-racial crew who have never been shy about their commitment to social justice, progressive politics, and anti-war convictions; have received a GRAMMY award for Latin Rock / Alternative Album of the Year. The album was ‘Street Signs’ – filled with body-moving urban sounds, which stemmed from the member’s creative freedom, encouraged by their label, Concord Records.
Set to release their 4th single ‘Deep and Meaningless’ on July 4th, Rooster, in just 8 months have gone from one of the most hotly tipped acts for 2005 to a successful UK rock group with sell out tours, a Top 3 album and 3 Top 10 hit singles. Their brand of sharp rock ‘n’ roll hustle has acted like a siren call to a new generation of rock fans who’d been longing for a band like Rooster to come along.
Emiliana Torrini is on her second album – ‘Fisherman’s Woman’, a collection of intimate and atmospheric songs that will whisper their way into your bloodstream. The 27-year-old singer and writer has toured with Thievery Corporation, and wrote a number one hit for Kylie Minogue in the shape of huge-selling pop smash ‘Slow’.
Terri Walker, the R&B singer from North London has four MOBO nominations and a Mercury prize shortlist under her belt, The 25 year old is on her second album – ‘L-O-V-E’ which has tracks co-written by Terri and this year’s Ivor Novello winners Remee and Cutfather & Joe (responsible for Jamelia’s Superstar).
Tyler James was raised in Canning Town, East London and in spite of being only 22, he sings with an unwavering authority more suited to a songwriter twice his age. V goers will be treated to James’ voice flying from the speakers and throwing ‘effortless jazz shapes around the ska tilted R&B groove.’
Countermine, the five piece from Bath have spent the last ten years in various guises playing and writing and performing at a wide range of venues. They have supported everyone from the likes of The Stone Roses to David Bowie and still with an average age of 22 between them!
A brief history of 10 years of V…
The very first V festival was held in 1996 and was the only event of its kind to be staged at two sites over the same weekend where the artists swap venues overnight. Previous headliners have included The Strokes, Muse, Dido and Pixies (last year), Coldplay and Red Hot Chilli Peppers (2003), Manic Street Preachers and Suede (1999), Prodigy and Blur (1997) and featured acts such as Travis, The Verve, James Brown, Iggy Pop, Macy Gray, Moby, Faithless and Kylie... The festival boasts the cream of the music crop every year and organisers are pulling out all the stops to celebrate a decade of V!
Text the fest, free kebabs and angels…
Once again Virgin Mobile joins the festival as headline sponsor, making it one of the longest standing music sponsorships in the business. They are guaranteed to bring us all the things that festival goers have got used to, Text the Fest, free kebabs and beer for their customers and angels onsite to do everything from putting up your tent to making sure you find it again at
