WAH10 Brighton review: Dimension demonstrates his versatility

Internationally renowned for performing on the biggest stages and festivals across the globe, Saturday evening saw drum and bass/dance music heavyweight Dimension travel down to the South Coast, coming through to deliver a night that will go down as nothing short of a rave to remember.

With Brighton becoming the central hotspot in the country for drum and bass, electronic and house this weekend with the widely renowned Boundary Festival taking place, the largely known and reputable rave organisers Worried About Henry took over the Concorde2 for an evening that acted as an unofficial afterparty - a space for locals and those who had made the travel down to maximise their festival day experience.

With Dimension bringing his live show to the prestigious venue right along the seafront, the Concorde enveloped a crowd of 600 people collectively embracing an evening of heavy, floor-vibrating basslines, punchy kicks and charged-up vocals.

The evening, a stacked lineup of four artists putting on sets across five hours, saw TLD, ROVA, Milli Cooper + MC Kerizma performing alongside the highly-anticipated headline act, Dimension. With doors opening at 11 pm, TLD opened the evening with an intense set showcasing a wide variety of trance-incorporated drum and bass sounds, quite a welcome change from some of the predominantly bass-orientated scapes. The crowd encapsulated a wide demographic and it was great to see a wide age variety in the audience, proving that the rave scene accounts for everyone and is a safe space to enjoy yourself unjudged. With people turning up in numbers from early, it was of course the anticipation of a seaside set from Dimension that had everyone engrossed in the event. 

One of dance music’s biggest success stories, half-Spanish-British artist Dimension’s distinctive songwriting style, high-energy output and exceptional live shows have made him a heavy-hitter on the rave circuit. With more than 2.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone and over 300 million streams to his name, there’s no doubt in his ability to make a hit ready for the clubs. A diverse and broad discography that operates within the realms of drum and bass, EDM and electronic-house music, his set began at 1:15 am and lasted until 2:30 AM, much to the joy of all the rave-goers. 

With an expertly paced set keeping the audience locked in for the whole duration of the hour and fifteen-minute set, Dimension effortlessly mixed between tracks from his discography and some crowd-favourite anthems from other drum and bass heavyweights. The seamless blend of rolling basslines with this mixture of known and less-known tracks meant the crowd were kept on a knife edge and for the most part, engaged with every drop. 

The cheat-coded track ‘Badaddan’ was infused into the set, which is always a reliable sonic for crowd interaction and singing. Dimension also demonstrated his creative versatility, switching between high-energy, fast-paced tracks and more emotion-fuelled, atmospheric tunes, giving the crowd moments to catch their breath before being pulled straight back into heavier-warped bass sounds. The crowd’s enthusiasm never settled and Dimension fed off that energy, creating an intertwined and interactive relationship between the DJ and the dance floor. 

Brighton’s Concorde2 is truly the perfect venue for any rave or intimate-sized event. The warmth radiating from the grassroots venue is unmatchable and the infrastructure embeds the sound impeccably - the long list of artists that opt to play there such as Charlie XCX and Barry Can’t Swim only proves that. A great evening that encapsulated exactly why the rave scene is more alive than ever, Dimension deserves all of his accolades and success, and the crowd on Saturday evening were sure to give him his flowers.
