WEST YORKSHIRE DJ & MC DUO REVIVE LOCAL SOUTH ASIAN NIGHTLIFE SCENE

There has been very little opportunities in the North for DJ's of South Asian origin within a club setting to play the music they love. Chunz X Makh are working to give a platform for talented South Asian DJ's.

West Yorkshire has been known to house, host and be at the forefront of South Asian Music and at the turn of the millennium produced some of the most iconic DJ’s, Producers and Artists of a South Asian origin. These icons paved the way for a culture which saw a decade of events hosting thousands of people on a regular basis and played a fundamental part of the clubbing culture in the North, with notable venues such as Majestyk, Creation, Maestro’s and Penningtons, Bradford being a regular stomping ground for these events.

Chunz X Makh, event founders of Watch The Drop! and BBC Asian Network presenters said “We grew up and were influenced by this wave of British Asian Music culture in the North and we also had the opportunity to DJ and MC at events during its peak. It was a melting pot for all people of South Asian origins to party and taste the eclectic sounds produced by creative British Asians during the time.”

UK-based deejay Chunz, who’s experience is not just behind the decks but also in event design, hosts the podcast alongside his microphone controller and co-host Makh, a qualified professional Life Coach and Motivational Speaker. Both witnessed, and were part of, the 2000’s British-Asian music revolution and are now applying their experience to support the music scene in the North.

Whilst the duo are now regularly playing to crowds all over the UK they have found that most of their gigs are predominantly in London and the Midlands , causing them to reflect on the thriving scene which once was in the North.

Chunz X Makh will be hosting a club night on 20th May 2022 at Sheaf St, Leeds. A venue renowned for inclusion and the promotion of local DJ’s. Watch The Drop! has a line-up of both local and national DJ’s who are of South Asian origin. Their next event includes award winning South Asian music producer and DJ Panjabi MC (Midlands) alongside Electronic DJ and a part of Daytimers Collective DJ Priya (Brighton), Local rave queen Jameela (Leeds) and Mankeepitdeep (Leeds).
