Thank you Netflix, for in our hour of need (well, 1,416 hours and counting...) you gave us not one but two unbelievably binge-able pop-culture phenomenons: first came Tiger King, then The Last Dance.
And while TK pips TLD for murder, massive cats and mullets, the ten-episode portrait of Micheal Jordan, one of sport's greatest athletes, and his celebrated Chicago Bulls team, offers more in the way of human endeavour, nostalgia, and an absolutely belting soundtrack.
Boasting some knock-out old-school hip-hop tracks from the likes of Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and a Tribe Called Quest, there's also one or two expertly-timed rock selections, including 'Present Tense' by Pearl Jam, which plays out perfectly at the finale. There's even a run out for British electro-hiphop outfit The Stereo MCs.
Randy Chung is the man behind the music, working as music superviser on the ESPN doc. A lifetime basketball fan (of fierce Bulls rivals the Detroit Pistons), Chung worked alongside director Jason Hehir for two years on the project, having previously worked together on another sports doc, Andre The Giant (which is also well worth a watch, by the way).
Other highlights on the Spotify playlist - which also features tracks not actually in the doc, but 'inspired' by it - include tracks by Prince, Outkast, Fatboy Slim, Drake and The Notorious B.I.G.
So here it is, 55 tracks and almost four hours of (mostly) 80s/90s hip-hop bangers.
