This year's Wide Awake Festival will be taking place on Saturday 25th May at Brockwell Park. Yet again, they will be showcasing some of the most unique names in indie, rock and pop music. Last year they had avant-garde pop artist Caroline Polachek top the bill in what was a special year for the festival.
This time around, they've announced that King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will be the headliners. If you're familiar with the band, you'll know that they're one of the most prolific rock bands of the past decade. Releasing multiple albums in some years, it would seem that they're always teeming with creativity.
Inspired by rock and all of its surrounding genres, their albums embrace a wide range of styles including psychedelic, metal, krautrock, blues, folk, electronic, microtonal sounds and loads more. Their live shows are completely unpredictable as a result, often never repeating the same show having so much material in their back catalogue.
They have a hardcore fanbase who love trawling through the lore associated with each album, the Gizzverse is vast. Their headline set will see high-octane riffs, plenty of guitar shredding and most likely some pyro too. In terms of other names on the line-up, they've brought on some brilliant names.
Young Fathers will be performing fresh off the back of their beloved 2023 album 'Heavy Heavy' and a Mercury Prize nod. Bodega have a new album out on April 12th titled 'Our Brand Could Be Your Life' which will continue their trend of anti-consumerist post-punk and pop artists Hannah Diamond will be playing a set that will immerse you completely in her world.
Other names to keep an eye out for include Squid, Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupil, Dry Cleaning and shoegaze legends Slowdive. Each year, Wide Awake manages to capture a brilliant balance between those who are established innovators and the next wave of talented alternative artists. It's what makes the festival unmissable each year and we can't wait to see some amazing names in 2024.
