Our very first Throwback Thursday took place last week when we gushed about the R&B charms of 112 and Jagged Edge. This time round we're peering into the past ahead of two hip-hop legends tussling together for the Doctor's Orders on Saturday 19th October, DJ Premier and Peanut Butter Wolf.

The epitome of the legendary Rakim lyric "It ain't where you're from it's where you're at", Texas reared DJ Premier has gone on to define the sound of underground New York rap. He's produced everyone from omnipresent lyrical legends Biggie Smalls, Nas and Jay-Z, up to underground heroes such as Big L and MOP. He's even somehow managed to lay down beats for Limp Bizkit, Christina Aguilera and Craig David without ever losing any of his patented boom bap and signature bounce.

He was also the production unit behind the legendary Gang Starr alongside the late Guru, and is a producer famed for not only laying down illustrious beats but coaching his muses into career best performances - on 'Invincible' above by Capone and Noreaga the latter admitted to delivering a poor album in light of his father's death, a rare moment of heartfelt weakness in a genre usually powered by aggression and braggadocio. Oh and he can't half rock it behind the ones and twos, as 1997 compilation New York Reality Check 101 (stream below) dedicated to underground and sunisgned hip-hop demonstrates.

If that wasn't enough Stones Throw records head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf will also be in the building. The Californian based DJ and producer famously started Stones Throw in the mid nineties, turning the label into an imprint at the polar opposite of the laid back g-funk drenched gangsta rap that the West Coast hip-hop scene had often been misguidedly labelled as only containing. Like Preemo his skill and crowd rocking prowess remains undimmed, as this special mix of Stones Throw classics done for the event demonstrates.
