Review of Kamaal Williams
Saw KW trio earlier in the year in March and the music was so much crisper, funkier, tighter and enjoyable. The music last night lacked all four elements, with a different drummer, who just wasn't good enough. It's sad to say that the KW outfit has gone backwards when they should be building, especially as this was the end of tour gig. Music seemed disjointed as was the set list. Just didn't flow.
Sound quality at the Crossing was really poor: drums too loud that you couldn't hear the bass. At one point someone in the audience shouted out to turn up the bass: hardly a ringing endorsement.
At the start of the gig all three were fiddling about with their instruments, which is always a sign that things aren't right, mostly within the band themselves. Throughout the set, the sound tech was running back and forth attending to instruments: another worrying sign. Mansur Brown came on midway and didn't add anything. Just seemed to tinker about, played a song of his and faded into the background.
Frustrating gig that should have and could have been so much better. However, i'd go and see him again as there's so much potential. The UK jazz is so diverse and progressive and full of talent, that if an act is not progressing, they can become yesterday's news very quickly.
