About

23-year-old indie/bedroom-pop artist from Birmingham Charlie Bennett returns with latest single “Sky High”, released via London-tastemaker indie label Young Poet (Conor Albert, Tamzene, WOOZE).

Inspired by the likes of Dayglow, Beabadoobee and Oscar Lang, Bennett started releasing music in late 2020 having taught himself to record and produce from his bedroom during lockdown. A self-declared “bedroom pop artist”, Bennett was drawn to the inclusive, anti-gatekeeping attitude of the genre due to its prioritisation of creativity over anything else: you make music simply with what you have, and the instruments you can play.

Intended as a coming-of-age anthem, Charlie wrote “Sky High” whilst watching the films ‘Sing Street’ and ‘Begin Again’ on Netflix around the time he was moving house. “I wanted to write a song that could fit into one of those movies,” Charlie says. The track was recorded in one afternoon with producer Jack Hardman (Luke Sital Singh, Lexie Carrol, Sunflower Thieves). As the song is lyrically centred around conversation, the two agreed that the track should be primarily vocal-driven and reverse engineered the instrumental to suit. Elaborating on the lyrical inspiration for the track, Charlie says:

“This song is about savouring childhood friendships – the feeling of sleepovers and the conversations you have when you should be asleep. It’s about the life you imagine having when you grow up - how you and your best friends will all live in the same house and go grocery shopping.”

Charlie Bennett has built a community of over 500,000 dedicated followers. At their centre sit his biggest fans, his “Strawbennetts”, who’ve streamed Charlie’s music over 12.5 million times to date. He’s received no shortage of acclaim and support has included multiple placements on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK, Our Generation, Fresh Finds UK & IE, adds to Apple’s New in Alternative and alt pop, a support slot on Will Joseph Cook’s recent UK tour, plays on BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Introducing, KCRW and the attention of major label bosses (one of whom Bennett remembers chatting to on Zoom whilst folding his socks).

“Sky High” is released 3rd May 2024 on Young Poet.
