Killhope Victorian Lead Mining Museum

A visit to Killhope is a unique and unforgettable experience. A fully restored 19th century lead mine, famous for its working waterwheel. Why not pay a visit and work as a washerboy for the day, see the working machinery in the Jigger House or don a lamp and hard hat and take a memorable tour down the underground mine. Visit the artworks and installations on site or simply just enjoy the breath-taking scenery and wildlife. Who knows? Maybe you’ll spot one of our famous red squirrels. Killhope is 450 metres (1500 feet) above sea level. We recommend that even in summer you come dressed for adventure and bring warm clothing and sensible footwear so that you can make the most of your visit. Wellingtons are essential for mine trips. You can bring your own or borrow a pair from us. Killhope is also home to Great Britain’s largest collection of spar boxes, unique works of art made of crystals and minerals found by the lead miners working underground.
