Review of AC/DC UK
I've seen AC DC UK a number of times now.. The Flower Pot is probably on the small side to really appreciate this act at their best. Great for energy and compact no frills rock n roll but frankly the band fall over themselves on the very small stage to the point of it being awkward.
I thought the band were on point, probably just off where i have seen them previously with "Angus" and his walk out and soloing on top of the bar not repeated from the previous pre Covid experience.. it wasn't quite as visceral.. Maybe age has caught up a wee bit or De Management kiboshed such shenanigans..
However it was a blinding set with all of the repertoire delivered in an enthusiastic, we are f**king glad to be here manner. Vocalist "BJ" worked hard and his enthusiasm was infectious, thought his vocals were blown a couple of times but he kept his powder dry to deliver set closer FTATR with his pipes still hitting the high register.. Impressive indeed. With any attempt at AC DC realism you need a rhythm section that means business and the bass and drums evoked memories of Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd at their solid, pounding best. "Malcolm" is the hardest, thankless tribute I always think, damn those chords keep coming and such precision needed.. fine job all night was done.. And Angus, well what can you say, I'm not sure how many dimunutive, energy packed freakishly talented guys on the Planet can deliver this, one the real deal and one a fine tribute persona indeed. Compelling and searing stuff.. The Rosie solo was an absolute treat.. Made a grown man cry I tell you..
I don't have a set list exact recall but it covered a mixed approach jumping from Bon to Brian eras with no apparent pattern but nonetheless enjoyable..
Back In Black standards commenced proceedings and we mixed it up from there onwards..
Not in gig order but chronologically we were treated to The Jack, High Voltage, Dirty Deeds, Dog Eat Dog, Let There Be Rock, Bad Boy Boogie, Whole Lotta Rosie, Rock N Roll Damnation, Down Payment Blues, Highway To Hell, If You Want Blood (You've Got It) , Hells Bells, Shoot To Thrill, What D'Ya Do For Money Honey, Back In Black, You Shook Me, Have A Drink On Me, Thunderstruck, For Those About to Rock....
Pal of mine said to me part way through, "if you close your eyes you could be in Buenos Aries" or maybe Donington Park or Glasgow Apollo or MSG or The Marquee and on and on..
I'd had a bad week at work, was full of man flu (not Covid) and entered that pokey little room feeling stressed and tired, 2 hours later I was feeling better, still tired but a good tired, felt like some good, honest rock n roll had purged out my system, high energy therapy for the disillusioned old rocker had been administered.. I stepped out into the night and a part of me felt 16 and ready to take on the world again.. Thank you AC DC and thank you AC DC UK.. Maybe i'll pick up that neglected guitar, maybe I'll give it another go, maybe, maybe, but you have to commit, we all know, Its a Long Way to the Top if You Wannna Rock n Roll.. Stu C Derby..
