Flughafen Tempelhof

This huge area of the former airport is open to the public as a park since May 2010. Here you can go for a walk or a run, do some inline skating or have a barbecue. The airport Tempelhof was designed by the architect Ernst Sagebiel in neoclassicist style, the Olympia Stadion is also built in this style, and was ready 1941, and is one of the largest buildings worldwide by floor space. In 1948 when West Berlin was isolated from the former Soviet union, the airport functioned as an air bridge where the allies landed every 90 second, bringing fuel and food for the West Berliners. The airplanes were called Rosinenbomber, raisin bomber, by German children because some of the pilots threw out raisins and sweets from the cockpit, sailing towards the ground in parachutes made out of hanker chiefs.
