//Ma Xiang 马巷/馬巷// (2024)

Every year, Chinese families throughout the country reunite to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, a national holiday which commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a chinese hero and poet. Over the three-day festival, families share customs and traditional food. such as zongzi, which have been passed from generation to generation.

Zongzi, sticky rice cooked in bamboo leaves, was traditionally thrown intorivers, as the myth says that this way fish would eat the dumpling ratherthan the body of Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Miluo river.

This is the reunion of three generations of the Xu family, along with their friends and neighbors, which took place on Ma Xiang street in Xiamen.

This movie shows the importance of stinky mandarin fish in Yi County Huangshan and the diverse lives of different groups of people from three different perspectives, namely vegetable market vendors, small restaurant, and large restaurant, and the in-depth exploration of this traditional cuisine, showing the breadth and profundity of Huangshan and even Chinese food culture, as well as the life philosophy of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. This is not only a journey of taste exploration, but also a journey of cultural roots, which is of great significance for the promotion of traditional Chinese food culture and the enhancement of cultural exchanges.

//Biang Biang Express 面面聚道// (2024)

The film follows the people and workers of Xi’an through the whole process of making a bowl of the local special - biangbiang noodles. Farmers working in wheat fields, workers in the factory turning wheat into flour, cooks and guests in noodle restaurants enjoying cooking and eating noodles. The film shows the rich world of Xi’an, the simple, quiet, relaxing countryside, to the dynamic, busy, ever flowing rhythm of the city. The films main focus is the people of Xi’an, their authenticity, their enthusiasm, and the landscapes and the world in which they live. The landscapes and cityscapes tell a story of their own, as do the faces of the people.

//Tao in Pills 道家良药/道家良藥// (2024)

Tao in Pills explores the basics principles of Taoism and its relationships with Traditional Chinese Medicine by narrating the life of Jian Shan, a traditional Chinese physician that found peace with the ancient Chinese culture of balance. Following him through a spiritual journey in the lands of Jiangsu, it shows the World as Lao-Tzu described it in the Tao-Te-Ching focusing on the themes of health, life and death. The ancient culture view the Earth, the Metal, the Water, the Wood and the Fire as the 5 element that describe and regulate all the processes of the World. The Traditional Chinese Medicine elevated this view, within the well-known Yin-Yang theory, to the fundamental principles of balance. Subdivided in 5 chapters, each of witch represent one of the 5 elements of TCM, Tao in Pills exploits the fundamental Taoist principle of unity to express the basic rules that regulate the World by narrating the life of a single man.

Odyssey 2024 will take place between 16 September and 16 October across the UK and online, focusing on the theme of “Food and Travel”. Now in its 4th edition, Odyssey is the biggest film festival in the UK in conversation with Greater China and Chinese communities worldwide via a specific theme each year. Odyssey is presented by NGO UK-China Film Collab.
