Sonica: Superposition w/ Markus Heckmann & France Jobin

A two-day workshop with artists France Jobin and Markus Heckmann. 15 places available. Tickets are valid over two days.

Day 1: Listening & field recording - Processing & composing

• Morning:

Participants will explore the urban environment through their sound walks and recording. Recording techniques both conventional and unconventional will be used to facilitate new ways of listening to the environment and considering how and why to capture sounds for use in composition.  France will also discuss how the recording process itself can facilitate a deeper connection to place, self and others.

• Afternoon:

We will listen and learn how to edit and clean up recordings, to compose a one minute track. France will discuss her own process of manipulating and assembling sounds into compositions. Both technical and conceptual aspects of the processing and composition stage will be discussed, and participants will work on generating short tracks to share and discuss with the group to enable them to have audio to attach to their visual component created using TouchDesigner with Markus the next day.

Day 2:  Visuals TD

Markus will cover from beginner to intermediate (adapting to the participants) elements of Touch Designer and will help participants create visuals to which they will add their audio composition. Each participant will leave with a short AV work they have created. 

Practical info: 

No prerequisite knowledge is required, Beginners and Intermediate are welcome, but participants are encouraged to have watched some of the First Things to Know about TouchDesigner videos (check on Sonica's website).

It is also helpful to look through the TouchDesigner Fundamentals course.

Participants should bring some field recordings with them. Phone recordings are fine and should be transferred to their laptop as .wav or aiff. 

Participants should bring the hardware listed below and have Ableton, or Audacity for those who do not have Ableton, and TouchDesigner installed and keyed before the workshop! 

Please refer to the System Requirements to make sure TouchDesigner will run on your computer. Please also bring a smartphone, a 3-Button Mouse, and an interface controller (optional).

Software:

• Latest version of TouchDesigner installed and keyed.
• The freely available Non-Commercial license for TouchDesigner will suffice. 

IMPORTANT: Make sure your OS and drivers are up to date.
