The Raggety & Folk Characters Workshops
Salaric Crafts will be running 2 free workshops alongside each other between 1-4pm in the Ed Shed at The Folk of Gloucester.
The Raggety - learn different rag rugging and weaving techniques, take
part in creating a community rug or make your own piece to take home
such as tassel garlands or pot stands. Also learn some latch hook
methods and have a go at some weaving.
Folk Characters - make your own dioramas of folk tales or create your
own puppets to tell their tales using various techniques, from finger
puppets to pop up dolls.
The event is free but please register with one ticket per human!
Who are we?
Salaric Crafts was created by Sarah and Alaric Snell-Pym over 20 yrs ago
to share arts, crafts and skills using mixes of modern and traditional
methods and materials. Our maxim is "Art and Science is for Everyone",
and we especially like sharing techniques that are in danger of dying
out. Sarah has been helping people make and create for over 30 years,
starting as an assistant for textile classes at adult day care centres.
Alaric is a Founder of the Cheltenham Hackspace and is very keen of
setting up ways to share skills and give people access to to tools they
might not be able to afford individually. Over the years we have built
up a team of people and workshops which go to Scouts and Guides,
schools, community days, festivals and more. We especially love when
there is an overlap of history or science and have made special efforts
to teach heritage crafts. We ourselves are still learning recently
practicing and learning new carving skills in various mediums such as
stone and wood and we hope to continue learning even more!
With a background in geology Sarah was keenly aware of climate and
pollution issues creating a series of Sustainability and green workshops
which they then transferred to across the general arts and crafts with
focus on reusing or upcycling materials and ethically sourcing materials
for use in the workshops. Sarah and Alaric now manage a small woodland in the Forest of Dean, allowing even more scope for sustainable crafting!
