This workshop is open to dancers, actors, physical performers, improvisors and those with no training but a desire to develop their creative use-of-body!
During this two-day workshop, you will meet a radical, dynamic, joyous approach to opening up personal and collective creativity. You will train, explore, experiment and innovate. You will explore the possibilities of the performing body, and how, by changing how you think about who you are, you can radically unleash the power of what you do.
You will explore presence, focus, charisma, joy, risk and liveness - all in the supportive context of a developing ensemble!
You will also combine structured and improvised physical training exercises with the development of solo, duet and small-group performing.
A little more about John Britton written by the man himself
"I am a director, teacher, performer and writer. I am Artistic Director of DUENDE - an international association of performers committed to ensemble. I was Lead Author and Editor of ‘Encountering Ensemble’ (Methuen, 2013) and am an internationally respected specialist in the fields of ensemble, liveness, improvisation and interdisciplinary physical performance. I’m also an extremely experienced performer of solo improvised and non-improvised performances.
I graduated from a Masters degree at Leeds University, UK, in 1988 and began work as performer and director. Between 1997 and 2004 I lived in Australia, during which time I began the detailed practical research that would eventually result in Self-With-Others, a holistic approach to training individuals in ensemble.
In 2004 I returned to the UK to become Senior Lecturer in Performance at Huddersfield University. A few years later Self-With-Others became the heart of a radically innovative practice-based MA at the University, which I ran for a number of years.
In 2011, I began to reduce my contract at the University as part of a phased return to freelance work, a process completed in 2013, though I remain a Research Associate at the University’s Centre for Psychophysical Performance Research.
I have written academic, conference and creative texts in addition to my stewardship of ‘Encountering Ensemble’. I’ve directed over 50 productions in multiple physical languages, as well as performing in a huge range of different contexts and styles.
I occasionally deliver lectures and run seminars at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels - most recently a lecture on ‘training liveness’ at the Swedish Ballet Academy in Stockholm and a lecture on the origins and contemporary practice of ensemble at The Institute of Modern and Continuing Education in Kolkata, India.
