Review of Cream Classical on the Waterfront
I attended both days in the disability viewing area. We experienced the following issues:
- My partner was challenged at the bar when using the disabled priority queue as she "did not look disabled". She was there as my PA and had a wristband entitling her to use this queue. Staff at this bar were also serving people who did not have wristbands.
- The disabled viewing area was on a platform above a main walkthrough which meant people constantly stopped to ask why we were sat there and how they could get up there too. At times I felt like a spectacle in a zoo. Some screens would be ideal, or perhaps position the viewing area further away from the main crowd.
- People underneath kept placing their drinks inside the disabled viewing area. One woman claimed we had stolen her drink and then tried to take one of ours! Again, screens would be ideal to prevent this and provide some separation. Even some plastic barrier fencing would solve this issue.
- The steward controlling the gate of the disabled viewing area was allowing non-disabled people to use the toilets on the Saturday which left them in a complete mess. In addition, the toilets would not flush, and the taps didn't work so we were unable to wash our hands. The general toilets were so far away that men were urinating against the disabled viewing area which was really unpleasant.
- A member of staff approached us whilst we were sat in the disabled viewing area and challenged us about being there. We had already shown our wristbands to the steward on the gate and had been permitted so this was completely unnecessary.
- The drinking water facility was a long walk from the disabled viewing area and when my partner asked a steward, even he didn't know where this was to be able to direct her. The disabled viewing area should have its own drinking water facility or at least one nearby.
- I had wanted to attend mainly to watch Kaleidoscope Orchestra however we had to be inside the venue by 5.00pm and they didn’t come on until hours later (I believe around 10.00pm). I was so tired, uncomfortable, and cold by this point that we had to leave before the set had finished which I was really disappointed about. I would like to see more flexibility for disabled guests to enter and leave as required.
The PA scheme is great but overall unless facilities for disabled people are improved, I would not consider attending again in the future and I would not recommend the event to my disabled friends.
