Review of The Hanging Stars - St Michaels Live
Take a pinch of Younger Than Yesterday, a dash of Rose of Cimarron, a couple of drops of Burrito Deluxe and mist with spray of Buffalo Springfield. Mix together with a heady mulch of 21st century London attitude and you have The Hanging Stars. 4-part harmonies, pedal steels and electric 12 strings, what honestly could be better? I have no time for a lot of Nashville's syrupy over-produced kitchen sink country, but these boys have brought the California cowboys alt-country Americana bang up to date. Joe Harvey-Whyte's inventive steel playing is comparable with the great US exponents Greg Leisz, Red Rhodes and Rusty Young, weeping over a solid rhythm team of Sam Ferman and Paulie Cobra, whilst Patrick Ralla's guitars and keyboards weave in and out, always complementing, never intruding. And of course, frontman Richard Olson co-ordinates and conducts like a charismatic mash-up of Richard Butler and Liam Gallagher.
Oh and St Michael's is a wonderful venue, trying to establish a reputation for promoting quality up and coming artists, think a fledgling Union Chapel.
Just a great night, thanks to all involved.

Review of The Hanging Stars - St Michaels Live
Great gig. Very hard to get sound mix right in churches usually but the promotors must have got a pro in!
Excellent set by the Hanging Stars, a lovely night out in a spectacular venue.
