I have no idea where the five star reviews are coming from. They clearly attended a different gig. This was one the most disappointing concerts I have ever been to. The only redeeming feature was Lonnie Liston Smith, who was really trying as the support act, which is why I give it two stars, but then come the “buts”. First of all, there was no Ronnie Laws, which only became clear after we had arrived. Then, as for Norman Connors himself, he was just like a blank vacant spectator. He appeared and disappeared from the stage several times, he didn’t really seem to know what he was there for and his Starship “Orchestra” was more like a string quartet. The fact that at the end the crowd just left and didn’t even ask for an encore tells you all you need to know. Such a disappointment compared to the great shows from soul veterans that you can see at the Jazz Cafe.
