#theBigGig - Love Music Hate Racism and SU2R MCR: MIKEY D.O.N

About

Love Music Hate Racism believes more resistance is needed and that artists have a key role to play in bringing communities together in the current climate. Love Music Hate Racism was founded in 2002 in response to the growth of the Nazi British National Party (BNP). The campaign worked with hundreds of musicians who used their platforms to successfully challenge the fascist threat of the BNP following the proud tradition of Rock Against Racism.

Music has the power to spread hope and unite communities against the hatred and division bred by the far-right. It is now more important than ever that music is at the heart of a united cultural movement which will ward off the threat of the far-right and strengthen communities damaged by the corrosive effects of racism. With support from our sister organisation Manchester Stand Up To Racism and sponsorship from North West Unison Black Members, we are able to put on this final get together of there year!

Join us on Sunday 24th November, from 5-11pm at Mother Mary’s (previously Font Bar), in the new live band stage downstairs, to celebrate local music and arts while we show unity in the face of far-right fascism and racism! Hosted by Yemi Bolatiwa, LMHR Organiser, locally recognised singer of the Manchester live music scene, soul artist and topline vocalist Yemi will take role of master of ceremonies, bringing the event together with words of unity and togetherness!

LIVE MUSIC & DJs

MIKEY D.O.N

The honour and respect Mikey’s gained over the decades has lead him to DJing and performing at countless shows ranging from the likes Lee Scratch Perry, Bunny Wailer, David Rodigan, Maxi Priest, Marcia Griffiths, Gregory Isaacs, Julian Marley, Yellowman, Dillinger, etc, to Hip Hop acts Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, Biz Markie, Slum Village, Ali Shaheed Mohammed (ATCQ), Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Roots Manuva, Gangstarr, Ultra Magnetic MC’s, etc, funk groups like Roy Ayers, Breakestra, Brand New Heavies, James Taylor Quartet, to D&B/Junglist legends Nicky Blackmarket and so on and so on…People’s biggest mistake is that they try and pigeonhole Mikey as just a Reggae DJ – and they couldn’t be sooo mistaken if they tried. Mikey simply loves spinning great records to the masses, so whether he plays Reggae, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Boogie, Disco, Acid House, Rave, Jungle, D&B, Jazz, even Pop music, one thing is for sure – when rocking a club from behind the turntables, or simply just holding the mic, there’s no doubt Mikey D.O.N is THE force to be reckoned with!!

ZOLATEC is an established underground/independent artist. ZOLATEC taught herself how to use Ableton Live during the covid lockdown period in 2020. Inspired by music ranging from Metal to Dub, she uses software to fuse these influences into her own dark & melodic compositions. With the use of midi controllers and live pan improvisation, her set is performed differently each time. In May 2023, she launched her original music at SOUP, Manchester. “My music effectively addresses the shortfall of authentic steel drums in music. The Island instrument was only standardized in the 1930’s, so it’s relatively new and rare to some. Many producers choose to use a pitched up/down sample of the drum, creating an instant loss in the dynamics and beauty of the sound.” WITCH HOUSE - DARK TRAP - DNB – ALTERNATIVE DUB – STEELPAN TRANCE

Music reflects the beautiful eclectic mix of our communities. Join us in building a movement that celebrates that: Love Music Hate Racism.

This is part of a wider series of gigs in co-operation with Love Music Hate Racism HQ in London.  It is so important to show national united fronts and music has always been the source of togetherness, I'm sure we don't need to twist your arm on that but just to show the value of your contribution to the show. LMHR is rooted and stemmed from Rock Against Racism 1970s movement. The other partner in this event is Manchester, Stand up to racism, and local unions.
