Review of King of the Slums
I'd waited a long long time for this one having never got to see King of the Slums first time around. I was slightly apprehensive about what to expect after so many years, I needn't have been.... they were incredibly tight and powerful
A mix of old and new was played which blended seamlessly... they started with Broken English from the new album Artgod Dogs.... a powerful scathing track on the state of the nation blisteringly executed
I don't recall every track but from therein I was transfixed.... into the zone with eyes often closed and arms flailing.... music this honest, emotive and powerful is a rare thing
A number of tracks from their classic album Barbarous English Fayre were dusted off and emerged feeling as fresh and as relevant as ever... Bombs away on Harpurhey, Simpering Blonde Bombshell and one of my all time favourites Up to the Fells were all there and executed with such power and potency
What impressed me the most was how well the new material seemed to so naturally fit with the old.... which I think surprised many given just how perfect some of the old songs are.... one in particular Churchbells over England from their Manco Diablo album from 2017 sounded jaw dropping good in a live environment.... just thinking about it now gives me goosebumps
... biggest surprise of the night was that they played 'losing ground' from the first single... I'd forgotten just how good that one was
There were a few omissions... no 'joy' or anything else for that matter from Blowzy Weirdos.... but what they played was superlative... and barring them playing a 2 hour set there's always going to be some classics missed
I just hope I get another chance to see them play live soon but extremely grateful I witnessed this occasion.... they don't seem easy to catch.... but I always felt kots were like that.... pandering to no one and undertaking all activities on their own terms.... In reality I wouldn't have them any other way.... they are special, really special... when bands from Manchester are mentioned it amazes me that they're not spoken of in more reverential tones... a unique band... nobody does what they do... it was a great night..... one which will remain etched in my memory for a long time
