Review of Leanin\' #004
This was an excellent event. The standard of the performers was very high. I enjoyed the variety, too. Although there was a basic hip hop/grime theme to all of them, they were taking it into new areas. So, for example, one group seemed to be combining rap with jazz funk. Another group were beatboxin to Johnny Cash classics. Great value for money and clearly drawing in plenty of passing footfall. The organization was superb. The acts flowed well, with minimum setting up between performances. Outstanding value for money.

Review of Dream Wife
Like the children of Kenickie, or the grandchildren of The Fall, Dream Wife beguile from the Wannabe howl of F.U.U. to the post-glitter call of Hey! Heartbreaker. Confident enough to forgo the ritual of encore, Dream Wife offer the promise of a year that really is new, a far cry from the reactionaries that would take us back to yesterday.

Review of Sly Antics // Black Lime // The Bad Trips // Bonsai
I discovered Sly Antics early this year. I can’t actually remember where, probably Twitter. I was seriously impressed by what I heard when I looked them up on Soundcloud. In June, I finally got to see them play live, when they stole the show amongst a brilliant set of bands in a showcase event at The Ritz. The audience response was amazing and there is a video clip on their Facebook page of the end of their set with the crowd all shouting for more. So, I got tickets for this one as soon as they went on sale. The venue was packed with a very appreciative audience bouncing about down the front and singing along. Frontman Sam and drummer Lee were on great form, and new bassist Chris who was playing his live Sly Antics debut fitted straight in, not showing a trace of nerves. Great songs and an energetic performance that really connects with the audience, exactly what we’ve come to expect from Sly Antics. They played all the songs from their Captive city EP which we were all there to launch. They’ve not played that many live gigs yet, but they are rapidly building a loyal following and attracting a lot of well deserved attention in the local media.
Black Lime had travelled over from Hull and were an ideal musical match to appeal to a Sly Antics audience. They played a great, confident set and I really like their new single ‘Sucker Punch’. I also enjoyed local support The Bad Trips, who played really well, and who several people I was talking to between sets had a very high opinion of. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get there until a little after 8.00pm, so I missed Bonsai who had stepped up at the last minute to replace the band originally announced for that slot. Promoters Scruff of the Neck really know what they are doing, so I’m sure they would have been very good.
The Night and Day Cafe is one of Manchester’s best smaller venue. It’s great for food during the day and I always find the staff friendly and helpful. Their policy of not charging for glasses of water is much appreciated, as I’m usually driving and not wanting alcohol. They also seem to be investing more in their lighting and possibly other technical equipment, which suggests the venue’s important commitment to presenting live music in Manchester.
Great night all round! :o)
