Review of Vinny Peculiar at The Castle

A wonderful gig by Vinnie Peculiar promoting his excellent new album, assisted by a great little band and armed with a back catalogue of wonderfully eclectic songs. A true British troubadour who I always liken to Ray Davies. In fact he's a national treasure to those of us who are lucky to have discovered his music and words. It was my first visit to The Castle and fond it to be a very friendly place, good beer and a wonderfully compact and atmospheric 'Music Room'. I'll be back. Oh I nearly forgot to say I really enjoyed the opening singer/songwriter, Steve Roberts.

Great couple of hours begining with Steve O'Donoghue followed by Vinny plus band showcasing tracks from his latest album While You Still Can - from the back the sound came over a treat the bass and drums addition to what I have previously heard from Vinny's duo stage show of guitar / keys was a thumping tour de force for the 'rock out' numbers - but had a subtlety that was turned on and off as required - was more than happy that the people in attendance were appreciative with not much talking over the quieter numbers and a pretty raucous reception following each track played - the room was pretty much comfotably full a few more could have been crammed in - well worthy of a larger audience...just not too large...

Vinny Peculiar is a class act who has been vastly overlooked. a true English songwriter in the mould of Ray Davies, Brilliant lyrics, a unique performance style and equally engaging either solo or with his excellent band. Go see this guy!
