“Why a F-EMOM? Everyone can play at any EMOM.”
Of course! And I know many organisers do try to encourage participation from under-represented groups, but the fact is that electronic music has always been far more densely populated by men, and that fact alone can be discouraging for women who would like to perform, but don’t know what sort of reception they’ll get. It’s a sad fact that women in the music industry are still all too often spoken down to, dismissed entirely, or viewed as tokenistic and/or objectified (when was the last time you saw a music review of a male artist where their weight, hair style, fashion choices or age was more in focus than their music?)
So yes, I do think that it’s critical to open up a space which specifically encourages women, where nobody has to question whether or not they’ll feel comfortable or welcome because that’s the entire point.
We need to be actively encouraging women to step up and get involved, because I know there are so, so many talented people out there who don’t consider themselves to have a viable platform and maybe a FEMOM can help to fill a little bit of that void.
Everyone is, of course, welcome in the audience!
