The Club Berlin Exhibition ls a celebratory look back and analysis of a creative 80s club night. Where Jazz Latin Funk & Soul was played in a basement and went on to influence so many Manchester creatives famously Simply Red, A Certain Ratio, The Jazz Defektors, Gilles Peterson, The Thompson Twins, Carmel, Swing Out Sister, Chapter And The Verse, Denise Johnson, Diane Charlemagne, 52nd Street the list of attendees is incredible. Colin Curtis & Hewan Clarke spun a hedonistic mix of Afro Cuban Latin Jazz that would send the dancers into a spiritual immersion resulting in a super expressive space that became voyeuristic to new comers and addictive to regulars. We have recently discovered some never seen before photos as taken by then art student Sarah Taylor which will be seen for the first time at The Club Berlin Exhibition and eventually to be part of the British Pop Archive at Rylands Library. BBC 6 Dj Gilles Peterson credits his few visits too the The Club Berlin as being a massive influence on him creating his early Jazz Juice compilations 1&2 and has on many occasions praised Colin Curtis as one of the most important djs in the UK Black Music club scene Hewan Clarke was the first dj to play at the Hacienda as Tony Wilson visioned that Black Music would be the future of UK music and he wanted that for The Hacienda and he again was on the right side of history.
The day will have on display visuals from the Tuesday night Club Berlin as taken by Sarah Taylor followed by a Q&A session with Colin Curtis, Hewan Clarke and Gilles Peterson and special guests (access to the Q&A is limited so please book early). The event will be filmed and the Q&A will be online for future viewing. After the Q&A we will head to the Pink Room for dj sets from Colin, Hewan and Gilles The Yes Club has 4 bars over 4 floors and a roof top terrace and eateries on 2 floors with full disable access to all floors.
