SUNDAY 30th MARCH 2025-BLACK PRINCE/NORTHAMPTON
VENUS FLY TRAP-electro post punk
“ Northampton’s VENUS FLY TRAP have extended their set for tonight’s gig. That’s no problem because VFT have eight studio albums with which to compile their set, but it’s a strange case of musical cannibalism that opens proceedings. ‘Control Addicts’ was originally a song by vocalist Alex Novak’s previous band Religious Overdose and was recently reworked for the Glass Records compilation. Like every song the band cover, it is remade in their own image and sets things up nicely as we head to VFT’s genesis for the highly addictive ‘Morphine’. The darkwave duo soon get the crowd swaying to ‘Vitesse’ with Alex hanging off his vintage microphone like a demented Jim Morrison and guitarist Andy Denton pulling mechanical riffs from his guitar. ‘Pressure Drop’ is cinematic in an Altered States or Eraserhead way before two covers close their set, first Suicide’s ‘Rocket USA’ then The Cramps’ ‘Human Fly’, both of which prove that there’s no one quite like Venus Fly Trap.”

+ATTRITION(COVENTRY)-dark electronic soundscapes
“Up next are veterans Attrition, legends who've single-handedly started several genres and have stayed true while many of their peers have jumped ship. The very epitome of cool Attrition take the audience on a sonic journey to the darkest recesses of the human psyche. With a sound that is genuinely unsettling the band deliver a master class in dark ambient electronica. What makes the band so intriguing is the tension of opposites, most notably Martin's understated whispers which seem to emerge from under a huge weight are juxtaposed with Julias almost operatic vocals. Martin works his Korg like a mad scientist and with some fine dark soundscapes it's obvious why the band have remained at the top of the game for over 30 years. Attrition are a real light in the dark.”

+DEAD COOL(USA)
“A four-date, whirlwind tour of the UK finds husband and wife duo DEAD COOL making a welcome stop in Coventry. Johnny and Angela Yeagher have been making music together for a long time but formed Dead Cool in 2020 and since then they’ve been shaping the world in their own outrageous image (just like the hair they style in their own salon...as their name suggests, they really are dead cool). Appearing to the sound of an ominous tolling bell, the duo emit a certain sense of danger, yet their magnetic sound soon draws the audience towards the stage and with a sublime, synth-driven sound, this is music you can actually dance to. The band are kind enough to wear their influences proudly on their sleeve and you can definitely hear a lot of Gary Numan and John Foxx in their modus operandi. In fact, if Dead Cool (in some parallel universe) were around in the 1980s then you get the feeling that their songs would feature prominently in episodes of Miami Vice and Dempsey And Makepeace (younger readers should Google it). With some inventive lighting and a fog machine working overtime, Dead Cool make a nice tension of opposites between gruff and clean vocals, and glacial cool synths and red hot action. Yet, one thing that they never lose sight of is song structure, delivering a succession of tracks that set sail straight towards your memory bank. It’s a very nocturnal sound that the band deliver and would make the perfect companion to a midnight cruise through some rain-soaked, neon-lit, Bladerunner-esque cityscape. It’s an enchanting set that the band deliver and they cast a spell over the venue which ensures that if their were any doubters present at the set’s beginning, they’re won over at the conclusion. Dead Cool, indeed. “
