Review of Subversion

Great well organised night, with a real underground feel.  There was a good mix of people of all ages from all over the Greater Manchester area, all there for one thing, the music.

Sound system was good very dark dance area with good light and laser effects.  The DJ's provided a good journey throughout the night with subtle changes in style that didn't jump from one style to another.

Also had a couple of well equipped chill out areas with tables, chairs and leather sofas.

Hope to see this a regular night in the Oldham which needs something other than its mainstream nightclubs.

Well done to the organisers. 

Just as expected from Greg Griffin. 

It may be a new band but there is no disputing who the man at the head of the project is.

Disappointing that there was such a delay with the stage time which seemed to be down to issues with the equipment that seemed to take an age for anyone to take control of and created much confusion between band members.

Unfortunately this started to become a frustration, especially for my wife who was attending her first Gig and was starting to suffer with claustrophobia given the small venue and the number of people barging their way through the crowd, there were also some rather ignorant people for whom manners are clearly a non-entity, bumping into people and barging about (possibly worse for drink). This resulted in her being pinned against a wall at one point and made it difficult for her to enjoy the rest of the night.

That aside the music was great. It was a mix of styles and influences and whilst some parts harked back to the days of Proud Mary, it's clear that Gregs other influences have provided a transition from the Proud Mary days. There's a much larger americana influence to the style of the music. Unsuprising given he now resides within that area of influence.

The vocals have also mellowed slightly. The gravely throated vocals have softened, but the power of the vocals is still there, and the change completely matches the style and influence of the new sound.

The lyrics are superb and again show a significant development and maturity to Greg over the past 4 years in which so much has changed for the man from Royton.

As the first test of a new band in his home town goes it was a great show, hopefully the first of many in the years to come, and I for one look forward with anticipation  to more new music from Greg and the band.

Review of GREG GRIFFIN and the Midnight Clergy

They were on stage quite late and it was a bit of a short set, but I put that down to, possibly limited material at this early stage. But they put on a powerful performance, their sound is very different to Greg's earlier Band 'Proud Mary' , I really like the new material. Greg acknowledged the people from his hometown which went down really well, he is a talented singer songwriter, with a very tight band behind him, looking good for the future!
