SOLDis the true story of Mary Prince and her journey to overcome the brutality of enslavement through the power of her indomitable spirit. Born into enslavement in the British Caribbean colony of Bermuda, Mary went on to become an abolitionist and autobiographer, highlighting the harsh realities of the brutality of being bought, owned and sold.

Her book was the first account of the life of a Black – African Heritage woman to be published in the United Kingdom and had a galvanising effect on the anti-slavery movement, exposing some of the intricacies of chattel slavery that are seldom heard.

Told through theatre, song, drumming and dance,SOLDis a masterpiece of Black British theatre inspired by the storytelling traditions of the West African griot.

Presented as part of Kuumba’s 15th year anniversary ‘Sankofa Celebrations’. Sankofa – looking back in order to go forward.
