Review of neu waves #16 Heartworms, Enjoyable Listens, VCR, In Parallels
neu waves gigs are consistently high quality with great music in a lovely venue for very reasonable prices. This was no exception. VCR are a talented local band in the vein of Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon, who were a bit rusty from lack of rehearsal, but still very good. Heartworms swapped from the headline spot as they had a train to catch to London. They were stunning with gloomy post-punk music fronted by the mesmeric JoJo Ormes. Enjoyable Listens then headlined and were also stunning. Just a singer and his mobile phone, but his energy, entertainment and amazing voice made for a fantastic spectacle, finished with a cover of "Angel" by Robbie Williams. The first gig of 2022 and, if they are all as good as this, I will be very happy!!!

Review of neu waves #15 Ellis-D, Temples of Youth, Freaky Grey
Ellis D, daft name I know, put on a superb show. Musically adventurous yet tight the band wove vocals and rhythms together deftly with a suitably driving beat of bass and drums. Another band to add to the must see again list.

Review of neu waves #13 Bug Club, Sins and The Heavy Heavy
Best combined line up in Pompey for a long time at that price point. Cracking night put on lovingly by the sonic enthusiasts Calamiity Cratediggers and Missing Promo

Review of neu waves #12 HALLAN / Saloon Dion / FNWD / The BBF
Hallan were on form with a much better balance in the mix allowing us to hear the guitar. And he is good! They were ably supported by Friday Night Weird Dreams who , as always, mixed jazz and rock into an exhilarating fusion of joy. The highlight for me were Saloon Dion. Driven guitar much in the mould of Sham69 with alternating singers. Another fabulous evening courtesy of neu waves.

Review of Neu Waves #10 Pynch, Currls, more TBA
Pynch are a quirky pop/dance/punk band with an energetic singer who brings the same energy to his guitar playing. The keyboards are the quirky bit with trills and beats that would be at home on the dance floor. All this rounded off withdriving bass and drum lines. Ably supported by Currls who deserve a set on their own. Powerful bass and drums thumping along with various harmonies and guitar riffs over the top. The singer has a vocal range rarely seen on a pop stage giving the songs an intensity and verve.

Review of Neu Waves #9 Slug Money, Dubbal, VCR
VCR were unable to perform so were replaced with the energetic pub band Sabres. Valiant but..., Dubbal were frankly dull despite the wizardry on the guitar. The evening was saved by Slug Money who were brash and entertaining with a fantstic bass player and a drummer to match. I'd see them again. It is a shame as Neu Waves is usually outstanding but were let down by the original booked bands.

Review of Neu Waves #8 Youth Sector, Eades, Operation Ivan
Unfortunately Operatipon Ivan was unable to perform but the other 2 bands more than made up for it. The intimate venue suited the raucous Eades with their flamboyant playing. Full of energy and passion. Youth Sector certainly look the part. Stitched suits giving them a tattered Hive like look. Vibrant music with Talking Heads overtones in the singing and facial expressions. Special mention to both bass players who played forceful rhythm and the keyboard player in Eades who also sings in her other band, English Teacher.
