RSPB Winterbourne Downs Salisbury Wiltshire SP4 0HA

At Winterbourne Downs we're re-creating species-rich chalk grassland. It's a nationally important habitat but in this area, much of it has been lost. The reserve will form an important link between the extensive grasslands of Salisbury Plain and Porton Down. These grasslands are managed to provide a safe haven for breeding stone-curlews, a bird typical of this area but which is under threat. Wander through the grassland in summer and you will be delighted with the myriad of flowers and the gentle buzz of insects. Winterbourne Downs is a great place to see a fantastic array of butterflies such as marbled whites, common and small blues and small heath - to name just a few! The reserve is still a working farm, and some of the land is being kept in arable production for the benefit of farmland birds. From the nature trail in the spring you may see skylarks, lapwings, yellowhammers, linnets and grey partridges.

Car park : The car park has a 2 m height restriction barrier at its entrance and three animal-shaped bike stands. We have a picnic table next to the car park with beautiful views across the reserve. Picnic area. Group bookings accepted. Guided walks available. Good for walking
