For November Attikk Sessions we are welcoming Sheffield based folk trio Maskareen.
Maskareen are a three piece diasporic folk band, taking classic songs from as far and wide on planet Earth as they can. Irish jigs, eastern polkas, French sea shanties, Spanish love songs, Turkish anthems and Russian polkas are all delivered with a punch and a swing, plenty of harmony and a measure of chaos.
Thom Cowley (guitar, vocals & stomp box) studied jazz guitar in his home of Reunion, and busked many of these songs around Europe, learning to sing in a dozen languages before landing in Sheffield and starting as many bands as possible.
Giles Robinson (double bass, vocals) played in a tonne of Sheffield bands before middle age seduced him into the world of folk.
Josie Wexler (viola & vocals) has been in the heart of the Sheffield folk & ceilidh scene for ever, and brings her love and experience of the weirder end of world music.
