Funky Drummer x Phonetics x La Rumba's Brazilian Carnival
Music Genres
La Rumba teams up with Funky Drummer and Phonetics for their 8th birthday celebrations to host a Brazilian Carninval across 3 rooms at Yellow Arch Studios with Mexico's Coco María, Brazil's 11-piece Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas, and London's WheelUP plus much more on Friday 7th March.
First up and flying the flag for Mexico is one of the most in-demand artists around right now, Coco María, who specialises in Brazilian, South-, Central-American, and Caribbean wax. Expect everything from Bossa nova, samba, cumbia and all sorts of rarities from Latin America mixed with her unconditioned energy to keep your feet busy and mind embarking on a trip around the world on Raze Sound System in Yellow Arch’s Warehouse.
Headlining the main hall we have the 11-piece Brazilian outfit, Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas, squeezing tightly on stage to bring the Brazilian energy to Sheffield. Led by saxophonist Gustavo Andrade from Sao Paulo, Andrade studied jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and quickly became a member of several top jazz, nu-soul and hip-hop bands in the city before forming the 11 piece big band The Brasukas which have taken UK venues by storm including a sold out show at Blues Kitchen, Leeds’ Belgrave Music Hall and Hi-Fi Club. Expect the full spectrum of Brazilian music – Samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileiro), Bossa Nova, Samba Rock, Axé, Forro, Brazilian soul, Frevo, Rio Jazz-Funk – from top musicians from the Leeds jazz/world music scenes who play with bands like Plantfood, Carioca Soul, Rumberos de Palo, Awen Ensemble, Mangorata with Portuguese vocalist Raquel Alvaro leading the party vibes from the front.
Next up is the Tru Thoughts label head and London Broken Beat pioneer, WheelUP, bringing a bag full of Brazilian drum & bass, house, and Bruk records with his West London energy to close out the Warehouse after Coco María. WheelUP is the moniker of West London producer, DJ and “bruk renaissance” torchbearer – Danny Wheeler. As an artist, producer and DJ of dual Zimbabwean and British heritage, growing up in the epicentre of bruk that is West London, it was only natural that Danny, aka WheelUP would gravitate towards the ‘West London Sound’; as WheelUP puts it: “It’s in my musical DNA”. Originating from the drum and bass world as Danny Wheeler, WheelUP follows the footsteps and lineage of 4hero, evolving from jungle/D&B to broken beat/bruk and was knighted an “honorary Bugz” by the original dons of broken beat, Bugz in the Attic, due to WheelUP’s work in pushing the bruk sound to new audiences, as well as Marc Mac who thanked Danny for putting broken beat back “at the forefront”.
Supporting Gustavo are the dynamite 8 piece band, Montuno, at the centre of an incredible musician collective that has graced Sheffield's Funk, Soul & Jazz scene for many years – from the Craig Charles Funk & Soul BBC 6 Music Radio Show (twice) and his acclaimed Live Show, to Tramlines & Sheffield City Hall. Saxophnist Kent Roach is a regular feature of Funky Drummer Events as part of the Funky Drummer Collective. This time we welcome his full band, in collaboration with a Brazilian Bass player/ Guitarist and singer to bring Bossa and Latin/ Brazilian funk flavours to the carnival party. Think Jorge Ben, Mongo Santamaria, and Antonio pinto!
On support in the warehouse is Phonetics’ Levi Bussue flying the flag for Saint Kitts’ going toe-to-toe with La Rumba resident, Román, flying the flag for Venezuela for La Rumba’s 8th Birthday celebrations and return to Yellow Arch for the first time in 5 years.
The main hall sees Funky Drummer Collective return to close out our event with Shadeda & Bald Ethos, Chris Welch warming things up plus the University of Sheffield Samba Band.
To complete our 3-room lineup we welcome Jodie Tyler, Sonnyleo, and Disorientalist to bring global bass music to the Café.
