May Bank Holiday events Events Guide

Southampton offers freshers a superb choice for nights out. There is always somewhere to go that will suit all tastes: whether that’s a quiet drink in a chilled- out bar or a proper night out in a noisy club - Southampton boasts the lot.

Oceana is arguably the most popular club in Southampton. The venue underwent a cool £7 million refurbishment before opening its doors to the baying mobs of students in July 2008. Since then they have attracted some of music’s most popular DJs such as Zane Lowe, Calvin Harris and Paul Oakenfold, while on stage they’ve brought in JLS, N-Dubz and Tinie Tempah amongst others.

For those who like to take a rewind to perhaps some cheesy 70s/80s classics then they need to check out Reflex or Flares. Pumping out the likes of the Culture Club, Blondie, Duran Duran and Kajagoogoo Reflex is always a winner for a fun night out and a chance to celebrate the generation that brought us the A-Team, the mullet, shoulder pads and ET. If you’re more into the 70s then head over to Flares for the grooviest disco in town.

All students in Southampton cannot get enough of Kaos, simply because it’s the cheapest, grottiest, craziest club this side of the Solent. Student-friendly cocktails at dirt-cheap prices guarantee a messy night for all.

In the Bedford’s area freshers will find the popular Orange Rooms, which is a classy bar and cocktail lounge. They opened in 2001 and have since expanded the venue size. They’ve also previously won Southampton’s Best Bar Award.

If live music is what freshers need then they need look no further than the Joiners on St Marys Street. This venue showcases some of the freshest bands and talents around such as Stornoway and I Am Arrows.
