Stockport Music Story in Conversation with Liam Newton
We are delighted to be joined by Liam Newton, author of 'The Worst Band in the World', the acclaimed biography of 10cc that he updated and expanded in 2020 to become the definitive account of the band's career.
As 10cc's lifelong admirer and biographer, Liam will be talking about his passion for this unique gang of four who he describes as "the unsung heroes of British pop music".
Eric, Graham, Kevin and Lol were all talented singers, musicians, songwriters and producers in their own right - but it was when they came together at Strawberry Recording Studios in Stockport that magic was created with their experimental recordings which resulted in the most innovative groundbreaking music the world had ever heard.
'The Worst Band in the World' is the last word on Manchester's finest, self-effacing and most successful pop band and Liam will be talking about how he updated his original book written in the mid-nineties and which had gone out of print, and turned it into a 500-page "doorstopper".
For the book, Liam interviewed Eric, Graham and Kevin but sadly didn't get chance to speak to Lol who inexplicably turned down the offer. Liam also spoke to Jonathan King who signed them to his own UK Records and came up with their unique name from a dream that he was looking at the billboard chart with a band called 10cc at number one.
Of 'The Worst Band In The World', Kevin Godley says there's "lots of stuff in there I didn't know!", Eric Stewart is "really impressed with all the new information'" while Graham Gouldman reveals "it's only after reading this book that I realise how influential 10cc were".
