About

Please join us for a very special Stockport Music Story Walking Tour that includes two commemorative record plaque unveilings for significant happenings in Stockport's music history. We will be celebrating the 45th anniversary of the release of Joy Division's seminal album 'Unknown Pleasures' with special guests Peter Hook of New Order and Clint Boon of Inspiral Carpets. 'Unknown Pleasures' was recorded at Strawberry Studios in April 1979 and released in June 1979. This seminal album and many other groundbreaking recordings would not have been possible if Inter-City Studios on Great Underbank had not been created by founder Peter Tattersall with the help of his musician friends Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman.

The walking tour will meet in the shop foyer at Stockport Museum/Staircase House at midday for a look around the Strawberry Studios exhibition. The tour will then visit the site of the commemorative record plaque for Hologram Studios on Park Street.

The commemorative plaque for Inter-City Studios will be unveiled on the wall of the Nat West Bank on Great Underbank, where the Nield and Hardy music store used to stand. Dr Peter Wadsworth will say a few words about the importance of Inter-City Studios and its development into Strawberry Recording Studios. We will then hear from the founder of Inter-City and Strawberry Studios, Peter Tattersall and his recollections of starting the studio in 1967.

After this, the walking tour will move along Great Underbank to Syndikat, which contains the street art mural of the Unknown Pleasures cover art and Ian Curtis' Vox Phantom guitar, for the unveiling of the commemorative plaque for Unknown Pleasures. Music commentator and broadcaster Clint Boon of Inspiral Carpets will say a few words about the album and introduce his great friend Peter Hook, bass player with Joy Division and New Order to say a few words.
The tour will convene at Alfredo’s Social on Little Underbank where a reception will be held upstairs with an opportunity to meet and talk to our special guests. The ticket price includes a large slice of pizza at the reception (please note drinks are not included). Please allow three hours in total for this event. We anticipate to arrive at Alfredo’s Social for the reception around 1.30pm. Please note that places are limited. All profits from this Walking Tour will go to The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal at The Christie to support research into BCAN-RAY (Breast Cancer Risk Assessment in Young Women).
