Join us at The Jazz Sanctuary for an exceptional night of fresh jazz featuring the Matt Cook Quintet!
Matt Cook is a London-based tenor saxophonist who has been described as ‘spectacular’ by JazzJournal Magazine. He has been compared to legendary saxophonists like Wayne Shorter (London Jazz News 2020) and Mark Turner (Marlbank 2024).
Matt formed his quintet while studying at The Royal Academy of Music in London, bringing together some of the most creative young musicians on the London jazz scene. He aimed to unite four distinct musical voices that each contribute their own style and flair to the music.
His eclectic compositional influences range from modern jazz contemporaries such as Immanuel Wilkins and Ambrose Akinmusire to pioneering figures like John Coltrane and Joe Henderson. He boldly blends genres, incorporating elements from 20th-century classical composers like Messiaen and Ravel, alongside nods to alternative rock bands such as Radiohead. Repetition plays a key role in Matt’s compositions, a technique inspired by spiritual jazz that creates meditative and transcendent moments.
Expect memorable melodies, expansive improvisations, and deeply moving harmonic progressions.
