More than two decades since hip hop collective Arrested Development released their first soulfully charged album, the rap pioneers reconvene for a nationwide tour of the UK next month. Manchester Academy is the first to bare witness to the ensembles catalogue of old school beats on Tuesday 17th February before they wrap things up at Bristol's Marble Factory on Tuesday 24th February.
Formed in the late eighties during a time that Public Enemy rewrote the hip hop rulebook, Arrested Development arrived on the scene with similar intent. Blending elements of hip hop, soul and blues to create a distinct sound, the group began to communicate an afro centric viewpoint through politically and socially charged lyrics.
This meant their debut long player 3 Years, 5 months and 2 Days in the life of.. gained them instant recognition, penetrating the top ten with ease. Hits such as critically acclaimed 'People Everyday', which you can hear above, soon followed, earning them a Grammy award for best Rap Album and Best New Artist.
The hip hop entity was naturally saddened in 2006 when founding member Speech announced they had officially broken up. Fortunately they later reformed, providing the world with another lean slice of their impassioned hip hop via a further album tailored towards a feel good vibe.
