In the early nineties hip hop delivered a Timberland wearing boot up the music industry's jacksie, when a nine rapper collective barricaded their way into the consensus. Led by an artistic overlord by the name of RZA, the Wu Tang Clan were unlike anything the music world had ever seen, and still no-one has come close to their impact.
Rough, rugged and raw, they regained the underground and propelled a hardcore vision of the music into the mainstream, uncompromising in their vision. Alongside the RZA the group spawned the charismatic Method Man, the scientific brilliance of GZA, street sonics of Raekwon and the off kilter lunacy of ODB, but one rapper has remained their most consistent and well loved emcee, and he's heading to Liverpool this summer. That cat is Ghostface Killah.
The Thursday Nite Mixtape 5/10 by Dj Skinny on Mixcloud
The most versatile of the Wu (check the above mix from DJ Skinny stitching together a handful of his classic moments), Ghostface has achieved mythical status amongst hip-hop heads around the globe for his acumen on the microphone. Whether showing a raw sensitivity too absent in the genre with his haunting 'All that I got is you' with Mary J Blige, creating illegible slang in his street paeans with Raekwon and Cappadonna, or crafting club bangers like 'Cherchez le Ghost', Ghost Deini is simply one of the finest rappers that have ever been around, period.
Whilst the Wu's halcyon period of 1993 to 1997, between the groups' first two albums Enter the 36 Chambers and Wu Tang Forever, spawned a litany of classics, since then only he has managed to maintain an artistic excellence befitting the crew. Ghostface's 1999 opus Supreme Clientele and 2006's Fishscale are both classics feted by the hip hop community, whilst his Ironman album recorded at the height of the clan's powers stands equally as tall.
His collaborative nous has ensured he's remained relevant in the modern rap climate, working with Sheek Louch of The Lox (who hit Manchester Saturday 29th March) on the Wu-Block album, and latest album Twelve Reasons to Die, a comic book inspired extravaganza produced with composer Adrian younge (stream it above on Spotify).
Ghostface will be returning to the Kazimier, following on from an incendiary showcase in November 2011. You can grab your tickets to see one of the greatest to ever do it in the ridiculously intimate confines of one of Liveprool's most well loved venues. Head here for more details.
