Patrick Ryder's guest selection for Work Them, Manchester

Piccadilly Records' Patrick Ryder gives us the inside track on some of his favourite records of the moment ahead of his appearance at Work Them this Friday.

This Friday, Work Them returns to Kraak off Stevenson Square, Manchester. An offbeat party dedicated to alternative electronic music covering fresh and classic strains of disco, house, EBM and psychedelic sounds, in the past few years Work Them have brought artists, DJs bands and parties from the United States to Eastern Europe to play alongside resident John Loveless, and new Work Them pal Dan Coultas.

This month, Work Them digs deep but keeps it local, inviting Piccadilly Records' Patrick Ryder to the party as guest selector. Having helped hold fort until 630AM at Islington Mill on New Year's Day, he'll be back with more eclectic and classic records, not to mention a few that haven't even been passed over the counter as of yet.

Patrick has taken the time to give us a quick preview of some current favourites below:

DJ Nature - Let It Ring

Milo has been bang on the money for two decades now, and this cut from a couple of years ago is the perfect warm up record as I see it. Warm, soulful but just a bit gritty, this one sets the mood perfectly and gets everyone locked into the groove.

Karizma - Nuffin Else

Karizma might never have hit the same heights as his better known peers, but this little tool, tucked away on the flip of his recent 12", is a complete beast. A drum riff from a scat heavy Bobby McFerrin jam, a loop from Quincy Jones and a tasty arrangement ensure that this one smashes it out of the park with no messing around.

Gnork - The Unofficial Chords Of Planet EE

Hungary's finest beatmaking export has been my one to watch for the last 12 months, and this track on Blind Jack's Journey explains why. Deep and warm basslines, cut up breakbeats and trippy atmospherics are the order of the day with Gnork, and his blurry house is perfect for when things are starting to kick in.

Moodymann - Sunday Hotel

KDJ made a belting return to form with his latest LP and this raucous, technoid burner is the perfect soundtrack to a dingy sweatbox anywhere in the world.The brutal Detroit bassline and choice Johnny Hammond samples let you know it's peak time.
