2010 was a ridiculously interesting time for the underbelly of electronic music. Dubstep had shattered the status quo in the mainstream but it spawned a myriad of genres, sounds and textures which would eventually form the umbrella term of post dubstep and then bass music.
Everything from the sparse staccato of James Blake to the raucous pop of Katy B got labelled under the term, whilst main room house DJs like James Zabiela and Paul Woolford would use the rhythms to refashion their own sounds.
Labels like Swamp81, Hessle Audio and Hyperdub were pushing these futuristic grooves into greater territories, whilst parties across the nation swelled to throngs lapping it all up. One of those was Abandon Silence.
What has followed since has been a heady four years for the Liverpool clubnight. The party has embraced the underground with bristling intent, booking the likes of Disclosure, SBTRKT, Bondax, Julio Bashmore, Joy Orbison and many more over the past 48 months.
As one of the finest tastemakers in the UK, let alone their city, their midweek jaunts became the stuff of legend, the event rapidly becoming one of the most talked about around.
They've since managed to navigate the weekend with equal aplomb, and turn four with a legend at the helm in the shape of A Guy Called Gerald on Saturday May 31st at The Kazimier.
We wanted to get to the essence of what made the party so special with a classics mix from one of their residents. Rich Furness has delivered just that, with an offering that raids the pulsating underground heavily with cuts from Boddika, Midland, George Ftizgerald and The Bug.
It's also whipped up the fun that stands true to Liverpool's unique party atmosphere, a nod to the anything goes policy and curveball one-upmanship that informs their resident's parties.
Craig David, Strike (above) and the Artful Dodger remix of Sisqo's 'Thong Song' all feature, as well as a typically OTT finale. It shouldn't work but it does, and as a final note we let the man behind it tell us why he chose the tracks he did:
"The tracklist is based on and had to include a few things. The bona fide anthems that have done damage time and time again like 'B attle For Middle You' and 'Existence', and certain tunes that have been big for each of us residents, as well as one or two that were big for Horza back when he was resident to represent the early days.
I had to throw a curveball or two like U Sure Do to represent the amazing anything goes residents parties we've had down the years. And Purple Rain was a must."
Rich Furness joins A Guy Called Gerald, Brawther, Jeremy Underground Paris and the rest of the Abandon Silence residents at the the clubs fourth Birthday in the Kazimier Saturday 31st May 2014. Head here for Abandon Silence tickets.
