Review of Lily Almond EP Launch
This was a magical night. Lily Almond and her band have such a friendly , and professional vibe. Lots of audience interaction , and a local crowd who knew , and sang along with lots of the material. Although this was a launch gig for her EP, Lily still sang several of her already released singles, which went down a treat for existing fans and 'newbies' alike... A word for the 'in house' 'sound engineer.... the balance of the bands music, and the vocals were superb, which for a small venue is a very tricky balance to find. But i could hear every word from Lily's angelic voice.(dare i say 'Joni Mitchell - esque'.). The higher registers of her voice are rich and stunning.
The new EP material has summertime feel , with softer flowing music, typified by 'ROSES' - Dreamy lyrics and a great chorus, which i loved, although the opening song ' PARADISE' is a particular favourite of mine. The final song ' WHAT YOU GET' is an absolute 'banger'.. just left you wanting more and more.
There is a small bar in the venue (downstairs in the JACARANDA)... the service was excellent IMO.
One slight minus point is that there is very little in the way of soundproofing between the downstairs venue, and the upstairs bar , which was also hosting a small local band . This meant that in between songs, (particularly), you could hear the music from above.... Which is pretty hard to unhear, once the performance starts again.
Prior to the gig, a few of us visited the 'record shop' on the top floor of the Jacaranda. Its amazing up there ... A small c**ktail bar, which was open throughout the night (until 12 Midnight), combined with a fully functioning record shop (VINYL)... we helped ourselves to a few old gems at a great price... Who KNEW....
