Review of Festival Of Comedy Newport - Winter Series
Really great night out, good line up of comedians plus the house band was a nice bonus. Venue was excellent, great facilities, comfy seats with lap trays, quality food options. Getting out of the car park was a little slow but otherwise would come again.

Such an amazing night. Crying with laughter at the comedy show. Excellent house band in between acts, and the venue was fantastic! Seats even had a pull out table to put our food and drink.

Review of Festival Of Comedy Newport - Winter Series
Overall it was excellenty value for money. Stand-up is one of the most difficult genres so first of all "hats-off" to all the performers that put themselves out there. I think its also fair to say that humour is a very personal thing and what suits one person could be a complete turn-off for others so please keep that in mind when I give my "personal ratings " below .
First of all the venue. Positives : Its local to us, so in better weather we could have walked in about half-hour, but were dropped off - so saved hassle of taxi or parking. Although didnt use the car park this time, from previous times it seems good and easier to get out of at the end of the night than St David's Carpark in Cardiff!!. Comfortable seats and good leg room. Had good view of the performers (we were about 5 rows back from the stage - left hand side).
Negatives: We understood that we had unreserved seats so expected a bit of a "scrum" to get them but having arrived at just after 6pmm (informed that doors opened at 6) clearly they had opened earlier AND there was a lack of organisation about where you should start queuing etc. Whilst OK for the comedians the speaker system looked a bit underwhelming for a music concert - see below.
Music: Positives: It was an unexpected bonus! Enthusiastic Lead singer, did his best to engage the audience which at times must have been difficult as people coming and going to seats etc. A very varied set-list of pop-rock-rap covers which "songwise had something for everyone" which I enjoyed. The guitarist's microphone set-up was good. ( see below).
Negatives: Could only clearly hear the lead singer about 10% of the time! I felt sorry for him and kept expecting the sound engineers to sort out the mixing/technical issues but to no avail. There was one song where the lead guitarist sang the lead and could hear him OK. AS noted above for a rock concert it looks like the speaker system in that hall would fail to deliver.
Comedians (out of 10).
Andrew Maxwell (compere) : 10 - was great - would have loved to have heard more of him.
Hal Cruttenden: 10 - hilarious - had us crying at times
Marcus Brigstock: 8
Jamalli Maddix: 5 - struggled to connect with most of audience although seemed to be expecting that from his opening comment.
Lou Sanders: 4 - poor Lou :-( seemed like had just been told 5 minutes before that had to do a show and cobbled together a few bits and pieces. Finished early but had to struggle on as Andrew wasnt ready off-stage to come back on ahead of interval.
Omid Djalil 9 -I cant spell his real name :-), On good form, did use the opportunity for a bit of political statements about the Middle East conflict but nothing that should have offended anyone. Brilliant bits on football chants
Sean Walsh: 9 - had us crying at times as well -possibly could have been a 10 but although he did manage a response to a couple of annoying hecklers (see below for last moan) he was clearly knocked off his rhythm and had to try and pause to get back to his set.
Final moans: The annoying guy at the front who obviously has skin thicker than tank armour to not get the message to stop using his mobile phone! Would have loved it if he had had it confiscated after the first time or been ejected.
The annoying (probably drunk) repeat hecklers who particularly during Sean Walsh's set were very distracting and probably thought people were laughing with them rather than at them. Would have also preferred if security had had a quick word or more with them. The odd heckle can be a good addition to a show but when they almost become one of the acts it can ruin the experience (it has happened to us before many years ago at the Riverside Theatre ).
That's me done- hopefully its seen as an overall constructive review with some pointers for improvement (at the venue) and accepting that everyone's sense of humour is personal and others may have most enjoyed the ones I didnt. Live and let live.
